Far more than another plan for the improvement of Staten Island, SI 2020 is a comprehensive economic development framework completed by a prominent New York City think tank that is based upon the input of dozens of civic leaders, elected officials and business owners on Staten Island and throughout the region. It is designed specifically to address the problems currently facing the Borough and to provide actionable solutions to those problems.
At the core of the SI 2020 process are two central points: firstly, that if current economic trends continue Staten Island will likely find itself in the year 2020 with a weak economy and few opportunities for meaningful local employment; and, secondly, that the means to avoid this situation is to compile, publicize and act upon specific, actionable suggestions for economic advancement in both the short and long term.
Perhaps most importantly, SI 2020 offers an independent perspective on the Staten Island economy as it presently exists and as it will change in the future, and will independently recommend actions that must be taken to ensure that the Borough economy of 2020 is one that provides good jobs and stable industrial and commercial opportunities for Staten Islanders.
The SI 2020 study has been completed by the Center for an Urban Future, a project of City Futures, Inc. As one of New York City's premier public policy organizations, the Center for an Urban Future has a long track record of bringing their rigorous information-gathering and problem-solving techniques to bear on a host of issues of importance to the City.  The completed plan includes an examination of ten mounting problems and six potential growth sectors, and recommends twelve specific actions that can be taken by Staten Island's leadership to make Staten Island into a vibrant, successful economic community in 2020.
SI 2020 was released to the public on April 24th, 2007 at SI Conference 2007. Business and Community leaders, Not-for-Profit organizations, as well as many others had an opportunity to hear Jonanthan Bowles, Director of the Center for an Urban Future detail the study.
